Eco Resolutions

New beginnings ~ Eco-Friendly Intentions for 2021

With a new year upon us, some will be considering New Year’s Resolutions and many focusing a few goals on how they can live more sustainably and create more ethical habits.

We have put together a few ideas that we hope will inspire you to live more healthily, naturally and sustainably in the coming year.

Switch to compostable and biodegradable products

At Original Way we love our wooden dish brushes, coconut scourers and coconut scrapers at

our sink side and we also love our Marseille soap bar too! All of these everyday products can be composted at the end of their life, but it’ll be a while before you're tossing them away, my dish brush has been going strong for nearly two years now!

Staying in the Kitchen; swap clingfilm for Plant Based or Beeswax Wraps and switch to stainless steel, bamboo or Silicone Straws. Do you like a takeaway coffee or tea? Take a travel mug along with you and take pleasure in the fact that you won’t be needing that single use container for your beverage. You could also go one step further by picking a place that sells Fairtrade and Organic produce.

If you haven't already, head to our recent Instagram Giveaway or Facebook Giveaway posts to be in with a chance of winning a Kitchen Eco Starter set worth over £45!

Ditch the Chemicals

Everything you put on your skin gets absorbed into your bloodstream, try switching to mineral based makeup, natural deodorants and shampoo bars, use natural soaps, toothpastes, lip balms and creams. These types of products come in compostable, reusable or recyclable packaging and will help reduce the harmful impact on the environment and your body.

Staying in the Bathroom; use soap dishes to keep your soap lasting longer, bamboo toothbrushes and hairbrushes, that will compost down, flannels, rounds or loofahs that will spread your soap further and help clean and exfoliate your skin naturally.

We are setting our intentions for the new year too and plan to stock safety razors; we already use them at home and love them, our husbands are converts too! They’re awesome, with no mixed materials that are difficult to recycle, just a simple recyclable metal blade!

Switch to organic cotton products

Next time you’re in need of something new, look for organic cotton, it is much better for the environment than conventional cotton and synthetic alternatives. Organic cotton is grown without the use of chemical pesticides and it helps give farmers a more sustainable livelihood. You can also feel the difference, Organic Cotton is much softer and more comfortable to use. Make a switch to Reusable Makeup Remover Wipes, Bamboo Cotton Buds and watch this space for Feminine care too! There is a tremendous amount of waste made from single use menstrual products, which contain plastics and often chemicals. Reusable menstrual products are easy to use and feel much nicer against the skin, you potentially have less exposure to unhealthy chemicals that can be found in conventional products and you are saving yourself so much money over the course of your menstruating lifetime! We highly recommend trying this out and keep an eye out for our new stock, coming soon!

Say no, to fast fashion!

Instead of hitting the sales in January, consider for a moment whether you actually need that coat, jumper, pair of shoes, etc. Is there something hiding in your closet that you can resurrect, mend or revamp?! If you are in need of new clothes check out charity shops, second- hand stores and thift shops (we love The Vintage Kilo Sale)! You never know what you could find and we think it’s very satisfying to be wearing something that no one else has, all whilst saving money!

Reusable bags

Use reusable bags for your grocery shopping; little mesh bags for fruits and veggies, bread bags (both coming to Original Way soon), totes for the heavier items and why not keep them in the boot of your car or a little collapsible one in your bag so you are always ready.

Recycle wherever you can too, lots of towns and cities have optional disposal bins and of course, so does your home!

Whilst we are encouraging the use of more eco-friendly products, we definitely aren’t encouraging you to do a mass clean out and dump either! If you’re still half way through something – use it up and then you can buy the alternative next time. This can also stop that overwhelming feeling that comes with moving towards a plastic free lifestyle and also allows you to research and plan its eco-alternative. Planning in your eco-alternatives allows you to spread the cost, because, let’s face it, you will be paying more, but do remember you are paying for quality and longevity too!

If you are keen to part with particular items but don't want to simply dump them in the bin , take a look at the app Olio. You can connect with your neighbours to share food, toiletries and other things!

Make a Plan

You might find it easier to do a room at a time, or maybe aim for twelve swaps this year, that’s just one per month - easy! Or you might feel like doing one swap per week, whatever you feel comfortable with ...’s like our favourite quote goes;

“We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly”

Remember, (it's ok to) Start Small!

Wishing you a Happy, Healthy and Safe New Year!

Nic and Clare
